New pc ideas please help.
Hello all I am looking for some ideas for my new pc.
I will be using MYS for most parts, http://www.msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf
GB X58A-UD3R mobo
Core i7-930
6G Kit ddr3 2000 Patriot-Gamer (unsure if it will work with mobo)
Patriot TORQX M28 128M-Buffer 64GB (all ready got)
Should I go with???
2x 1GB 1280M GTX 470 cards
or
1x 1GB 1536M GTX 480 and add another at a latter stage?
What PSU to get??
I also have a this monitor Acer X243Hbmid 24 inch 1920 x 1080 with HDMI.
If you have any suggestions please let me know.

Nothing inherently wrong with anything you have suggested yourself. You dont want to go with ATI video cards? That would possibly be my one potential change from what you have suggested + whether you need the 2000mhz rated ram - but that is not a big issue unless you arent going to overclock.
My i7 930 runs at 4.0ghz 24/7 and does go higher but I backed it off a bit for 24/7 capability. I still havent played around much with my 1866mhz rated ram and only have it running @ 1280mhz atm.
So basically if you like those components go for it. Just consider the following on video cards:
Nvidia 470 x 2 = approximately $880
Nvidia 480 = approximately $630
ati 5870 x 2 = approximately $860
Ati 5970 = approximately $770
If you are talking about spending those sort of dollars I would lean towards the 5970 atm if you can stretch although I too have a soft spot for nvidia. I wouldnt go the dual 470 way if I was you and chose out of the 480 or 5970. You can always add another one of whichever you chose down the track!! The sweet spot is in the slower cards of course (5770/5850/5870/470) but depends on whether you want reasonably good framerates or the best possible......and your budget of course. People will rarely complain something is too fast
.
I generally buy the fastest available at the time in regards to video cards when I upgrade and my nvidia 1792mb 295gtx is still going strong. But I do pay plenty of $$$$$ for it!!
As for power supply well just make sure it is a quality unit. Corsair make good ones while I really like the Enermax ones and a few other brands are good too. Read some reviews online if you could be bothered. Get a good mid range+ power supply (600w+) with high efficiency (80%+). My Enermax Revolution 85+ gets amazing reviews and is at the upper end as far as quality power supplies go. The top end power supplies have 5 - 10 year warranty also, so it is a indication of their build quality imho. The fact I run a 1050w capacity psu is perhaps a bit of overkill though.
Again people never complain that they have too much power at their disposal....
and budgets come into it.

Dazzar thank you very much for taking the time to add so much content to this discussion and all the links (I will visit them over the next few days).
Yeah I've been happy with both ati and nvid so I am open to suggestions.
Currently I have been using a nivid 8800 gtx so either way it will be a big jump to my next system.
Dazz what mobo are you using ATM?

Gigabyte X58 Extreme motherboard is what I am using.
Some of the newer motherboards now have usb 3.0, 6gb/s sata and some other "new" features. I think the new boards from Gigabyte have a A designation. For example GA-X58A-UD9 so the board you are looking at would be fine. Speaking of which the GA-X58A-UD9 is a balltearer of a motherboard from Gigabyte. If you want to add cards to it they need to be pci-e. It has seven (7) pci-e x 16 slots and can support up to 4 way sli or 4 way crossfire. I know the cost is hideous though - apparently it is/was the worlds most expensive enthusiast motherboard (rrp was around $699USD at release - it can now be had for around $600AU).

Make your own build, at the moment nVidia and ATI are pretty much even for raw power, with nVidia just edging out over ATI. However I feel the drawback for nVidia is the power draw on the cards, you are looking at a lot more watts for an nVidia card.
With your motherboard, make sure it can support either crossfire (ATI) or SLI (nVidia), so effectively get a motherboard that works best with your video card should you aim to put two into the machine.

Whichever has the better warranty, probably gigabyte, but all those brands are fine quality wise
HooT wrote:And suggestions for PSU's?
Corsair, Seasonic, Enermax are the most popular of the good quality brands, and the Silverstone PSUs and Antec Signiture series are good too
you'd need about a 600W psu for just the one 5970 or an 800-850W one if you plan to add a second at some point
also ddr3 2000Mhz memory is stupid overkill unless you're doing 4Ghz+ overclocks

If you want to run 2x GV-R597D5-2GD-B You need a power supply that provides at least 1000-watt and with two 2x3-pin(2x6pin) and two 2x4-pin(2x8pin) PCIe power connectors is required.
Will Enermax REVOLUTION85+ 1050W CrossFireX™ do it? I think so...

Now to start saving $2300 the longer it take me to save the cheaper it will get
If anyone has other suggestions please let me know, thanks.

Mmm, yes for the release of the GTX480 the power consumption is rather poor. However the performance is lackluster against a dual GPU ati but fairs quite well against the 5870. When the release of possibly the GTX490 dual GPU, will again see ATI choking on flips flaps.
Take into account the benefits of CUDA and 3 monitor display I would suggest that whatever dribble you wanna continue with flip and your ATI cock sucking a 4% performance win over Nvidia in majority of fps synthetic benchmarks you can fucking stick it right up your arse.

Riddick I wasn't saying ATI had better performance overall, I actually said nVidia is ahead for now. We all know that it will continue to change leads as they stagger their new releases from each others. I was merely pointing out the power consumption differences. The stock 480GTX is about 5%-20% (game varying) better performance than the stock HD5870 and that's to be expected. The 470GTX and the HD5850 are pretty much the same with up to 5% increase in some games for the 470GTX.
So yes, for single GPU raw power that takes shits on everything then nVidia is the only option (480GTX ~$700), but for raw power in one PCIe slot the HD5970(~$875) takes the cake - at least until the dual GPU 4XXGTX cards come out from nVidia.
But for most people running a 1920x1080 setup an HD5850 (~$380) is the best cost/performance card right now, unless the 470GTX (~$450) cards drop in price
